This caught me by surprise when I was checking around for last-minute sales on games and stuff on the 3DS eShop. Following the news of no longer being able to use Nintendo eShop cards to reload your eShop balance directly on your Nintendo 3DS or Wii U consoles*, a firmware update for both of these legacy Nintendo consoles recently rolled out simultaneously.
Don't be surprised if one more firmware update happens to both these aforementioned consoles simultaneously before both the eShops close their doors for new purchases for good.
Homebrewed 3DS owners: Luma3DS will still boot on v11.16.0-48 though BootNTR won't work until it receives an update. -Courtesy of GBATemp user ihaveahax (original post)
Homebrewed Wii U owners: Disable autobooting if you're running Tiramisu before updating your Wii U. -Courtesy of GBATemp user Luna4256 (original post)
* If you have your NNID that you used for your 3DS and/or Wii U linked to the Nintendo Account on your Nintendo Switch console(s), you can still reload your eShop balance via your Nintendo Switch if you have your overall eShop funds merged. Just be wary of the 3DS and Wii U eshop closures on March 27th of next year though.

Another update got released for for the 3DS just late yesterday. It's just a minor update to the previous one that fixes a small typo in the Nintendo Customer Support phone number for the COPPA legal info string. Post on GBATemp with a screenshot of what's changed.
