Typically they are automatically removed 30 days upon being marked read, but since inactive or banned members and bots often get notifications (and cannot read them), it can clutter the notifications database table, so every now and then I manually mark all inactive or banned member's and bot's notifications as read via phpMyAdmin and wait for them to be automatically removed after 30 days! Even then, it still gets cluttered, so I will end up marking every single unread notification (Fun fact: At the time of this post, there are currently 540 (Not anymore!) notifications in the database, and the highest notification ID is
