This is the official discussion and release thread for my hack, Wario Land 3: The Master Quest (Formerly known as Almost Kaizo edition)!

Disclaimer:
There have been some mixed reviews on the nature of this hack, but just to be clear: The focus of this hack is mainly harder (Or even easier!) levels! Many levels have been modified, and some others are brand new levels! This is akin to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Master Quest (Where the hack is named after): Dungeons have been changed to make the game more challenging! Criticism is welcome, but please, take the intended focus of the hack into consideration when you post your thoughts!

Word of warning: Play this game in English! If you play this in Japanese, it will crash when you go to The Temple after getting the 5th Music Box, and you WILL NOT be able to win the game!

So anyway! Here is the story!

To make it sorta simple:
Wario flies a plane. It catches fire and crashes to the ground. Wario sees a cave. Wario goes into the cave. Wario sees a music box. Wario tries to wind it up. The music box absorbs Wario. Wario wakes up to a face in a temple. The face mentions that the world was made by some guy called Tiger21820. The face tells Wario that Mr. Face was the sage Tiger appointed to protect the world. Tiger was sealed away by some invader, and 5 music boxes are needed to reverse the seal. Mr. Face also mentions something about treasure being free for the taking. Wario agrees to rescue Tiger along with some loot to boot. Wario leaves the temple. The game begins.

About this hack:

The focus of this hack is difficulty and skill! It will test your precision skills, your reaction skills, your patience, and you may even have to abandon Wario logic to get past some areas! You may have to think outside the music box! (Get it? Wario is in a music box)
The game actually has REALLY hard parts, and really easy parts! The parts that are hard ARE HARD!!

The first thing to be aware of are these things:
The skull tile! These are actually the common warp tiles used everywhere in the game, but with a different graphic!
If you touch one, you will return to the title screen! This is the "Highlight" of the hack!

Think you can handle it?

Some tips to reduce the stress:

You can create a "Restore Point" by pausing the game and selecting "Save"! The next time you get sent back to the title screen, you will return to the point where you suspended your game! This can be done as many times as you want, so make sure you do it!

For those with keyboards that have rollover, it is not recommended that you play this with the arrow keys! It will not work! Try using ASDW or use a number pad, or use GameYob, a Nintendo DS Gameboy Color emulator (If you have a NDS homebrew card)

The game can be completed! You can get all 100 treasures and 8 musical coins in all levels without cheats! I suggest that you get all 8 coins BEFORE you get all 100 treasures while you are still able to save!

Changes (Not all of them will be listed, this is to find out for yourself!):

Various:
A few key locations are changed
The robo mouse from N2 The Peaceful Village (Not actually used, but updated none the less) and E1 The Stagnant Swamp will return you to the title screen if they get you, so watch out! The bosses from N6 Sea Turtle Rocks and E1 The Stagnant Swamp will also do the same!
Various level oversights present in the regular game (Such as shadows and a few breakable blocks that should not be breakable in the first place) have been fixed!

Notable changes to levels:
Remember how W1 Desert Ruins did not distribute the treasures evenly? Well, that is no longer the case! The green chest and key was moved to the daytime side! You will still need to do the golf mini game if you want all 8 musical coins!

W4 A Town in Chaos's blue chest was moved to the boiler room (with the fans) to accommodate the unused goal door tiles!

E2 The Frigid Sea's blue treasure room was changed to be more puzzle (not really) oriented that involves the snowball mechanic! It is actually simpler!

S6 Above the Clouds is harder! Way harder! Like a "perfect precision enemy jumping where one slip-up awards you with the title screen" kind of harder! Take my word for it! I got sent back to the title screen 60 times doing the blue chest and getting 8 musical coins!

Remember to apply the IPS patch to an unmodified ROM!
You can use Lunar IPS to apply the patch! Go to the Lunar Magic Website to download it!
A suitable ROM would be Warioland 3 (J) (M2) [C][!]

I plan to release an updated version every 6 months (2 a year), one in June, and one in December!
I will post releases from time to time instead of limiting them on a 6 month basis! I have no set schedule for releases, you may just have to keep checking this thread from time to time and see what happens! This doesn't mean that each release will come out in less than 6 months though!
There will always be a release on June and December though!

I have one question though:
Has anyone figured out where the chest items for each level are stored in the ROM? I want to swap the green treasure for E3 Castle of Illusions with the blue treasure for E6 The East Crater!

Fun facts!

I counted how many times I was sent back to the title screen on one playthrough, and I was sent back 439 times, with 60 of them being from getting the blue chest and 8 musical coins from S6 Above the Clouds!

This hack was originally a hack just to mess around with things, and was never intended to be released to the public! The oldest known version was in November 29, 2012! That's a long time!

And finally:
The hall of fame!

If you complete the game (Get all 100 treasures, and 8 musical coins in all levels), then your name will be posted here (along with how many times you were sent back to the title screen)! I also recommend that you count how many times you get sent back to the title screen! Those who post how many times will be given a rank! The less times they had will have higher ranks!

You will also be featured in the credits!

Important!
In order to earn a spot in the credits and hall of fame (as well as be eligible for the prize), you must show proof of completion (In the form of screenshots) and only those who post it here will be acknowledged! Those who also do a Let's Play/100% Speedrun of this hack need to post a link to the video(s) (Or just post them here!) to be included in the credits!

A good example of a valid recording suitable for qualification would be the playthrough playlist at the bottom of this post![/U][/B][/COLOR]

The credits have a limited number of lines for names, so If someone completes the game and the credits are full, an old name will be replaced by the new name! A single entry will be 2 lines: 1st is the Wario Forum username of the completionist, 2nd is how many times the completionist was sent back to the title screen (If restarts are not counted, this line will say "XXXXRESTARTS!")

Also, you can also ask how you want your name to appear in the credits! The colors are:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Release #020 is out as a little Christmas gift! And for another little Christmas treat, I'm also releasing some historical patches of the hack back before it was Master Quest, with the oldest version dating as far back as 2012! You'll find the zip file on the first post!

Here is the history of Wario Land 3 Master Quest (From the txt file that was included with the historical releases zip file):

Back before the hack became Wario Land 3 Master Quest, the hack was sort of a scratch pad for experimenting various things, and
was not really intended to be released at all!

It is not known exactly when the hack begun, but the records show that the hack dates as far back as November 29, 2012 (which I
have included here), but may have dated farther back to 2011!

There has also been another revision dating November 1, 2014, and is also included!

The hack was first released to the public back in April 26, 2017 on Wario Forums! It underwent several revisions (Called updates)
before transitioning to become Wario Land 3 Master Quest! There were possibly a total of 23 different updates in this stage of
development, which are included here! Please note that Update 017 appears to be lost (or intentionally skipped,
and was instead Update 016.1), and Update 001 was possibly the initial release, or is lost!
Updates 002-016 (as well as the initial release) used the bps format, and may not work correctly, or at all!
These date from April 26, 2017 to April 29, 2017! They will not be included here, as they cannot be patched properly!
Update 016.1 was released May 10, 2017, and Updates 018 (017 is lost, or never existed in the first place) to 020 were released
from March 18, 2018 to March 19 2018, and Update FINAL was released on March 20, 2018!

The hack was given the working title of "Almost Kaizo Edition" and had two know demos, though Demo 1 appears to be lost...

Demo 2 was released on April 14, 2018!

The first version to use the name Master Quest was released on July 29, 2018 (As Release #000), and has evolved into the hack
we know today!

Also, yes, Release #021 is currently under development, and there are several changes, with one of them being a guaranteed restart! There aren't enough changes to release it yet, so you're just going to have to wait yet another ice age for me to release it! Too bad!

So for those here who don't know the full story of Master Quest, here it is:
Tiger21820 was the creator of the music box world, and he, plus his many inhabitants lived together peacefully...
One day, an evil clown invaded the music box world, and started wreaking havoc using evil magic...
This evil magic started forming deadly skull tiles that killed anything that touched them (which explains why enemies in addition to Wario die to them in game), and eventually started turning the inhabitants into strange critters...
Tiger and some elite wizards got 5 music boxes to seal the clown's magic before sealing away the clown, and (Tiger) appointed 5 powerful guards (the bosses) to guard 4 of the music boxes directly (other elite guards guarded other important treasures), while Tiger himself hid the final music box on the moon which could only be summoned by a gong, which was guarded by the 5th powerful guard... However, just before the clown (and his power) was fully sealed away, he use the last of his power to trap Tiger into his body, and turn all the guards in giant beings, who still, despite being transformed, set off to guard the music boxes and specific treasures... The clown along with Tiger was sealed away in the northern temple...

Some time later...

Wario thought it was a very lovely day outside, so he decided to fly his plane across a large forest, hoping to score some treasure during the outing when suddenly his plane catches fire and makes a crash landing (his plane was totaled) into the vast forest...
Wario wanders around thinking his day couldn't get any worse when he stumbles into a cave with a beautiful music box on a pedestal...
Wario decided to try to wind it up and listen to it's melody, but however much he tried to turn the key, it wouldn't move! Wario, thinking that the thing was busted, turned to leave when suddenly, he finds himself in an unfamiliar location... Suddenly, a voice by a hidden figure tells Wario that the world he is in was made by Tiger21820, and that the hidden figure was the sage Tiger appointed to protect his world... The hidden figure then explained to Wario that a wicked being invaded Tiger's world, sealing him (Tiger) away, and that 5 music boxes were needed to release the seal holding Tiger and free him... Wario was told that if he frees Tiger, then Tiger would be able to return Wario back to his own world... Wario didn't think much of this story, so he sort of shrugged at it, but the hidden figure then added that if Wario finds any treasure during this quest, he will be able keep all of it! This DEFINITELY got Wario interested in the whole quest, so after some thinking, Wario gleefully agrees to rescue Tiger in exchange for all the treasure he can find! Wario leaves the temple and begins the most CHALLENGING quest Wario will EVER face!

Wario, after shedding much blood, sweat, and tears, while also heavy with treasure eventually finds the 5 music boxes, returns to the temple, where is praised by the hidden figure for a job well done! The hidden figure tells Wario to use the 5 music boxes to break Tiger's 'seal', which Wario obeys... After the music boxes finished their song, the temple starts violently shaking, and crumbling, and once subsiding, reveals that the evil clown has once again been freed with all his evil magic restored! Wario could not believe what he saw! The clown laughs maniacally, and reveals to Wario that Tiger was trapped in his body the whole time, and will now do the same to Wario! Now Wario is PISSED off that he had to suffer all of that, and be tricked in the end! Wario fights the clown to avoid being trapped into his body among other matters, eventually destroying the ugly abomination once and for all!

Upon the clown's destruction, the evil magic cast upon the music box world began to wane, causing every skull tile to vanish, all the inhabitants to return to their normal selves, and finally freeing Tiger from his imprisonment! Tiger, along with the world inhabitants, thanks Wario for saving them, and Tiger introduces himself as the creator of the world... He explains to Wario about everything mentioned in the beginning of the story (re-read if you forgot!)... After Tiger tells Wario about the clown trapping him into his body, all of the inhabitants upon Wario's arrival to the cursed world were afraid that Wario would free the clown, tried to stop Wario from doing so (Wario was unaware that this was the case), but never could have imagined that Wario would be able to destroy that clown! Tiger tells Wario that he and the other inhabitants are forever in Wario's debt for freeing them from the clown, and to show their gratitude, they give Wario every last bit of treasure he has collected on his quest, much to Wario's delight, and approval! Tiger finally returns Wario, along with his treasure back to his own world, and all lived happily ever after!

For the upcoming Release #022, I will reveal that Anonster (the Spider Boss of Out of the Woods), after being dormant in the game's code for so long, will be returning to Wario Land 3 Master Quest! However... he WILL NOT be replacing Doll Boy in Out of the Woods (though that WAS the plan, to prevent speedrunners from circumventing the boss and getting the treasure immediately), no, he'll be the boss of someplace even more sinister... I had to restart over 20 times trying to beat him... It's that hard!

What level is it? I'M NOT TELLING YOU! YOU'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL RELEASE #022 COMES OUT SOME TIME NEXT YEAR! HA!!! But to those who play this hack regularly, (if anyone here even DOES!) you're going to hate me for it!

Fine, I'll tell you: It's the boss of Above the Clouds (The hardest level in the game), who is guarding the final music box... It is the single hardest treasure (not to mention, the LAST ONE! But wasn't it already?) in the game, putting S5 Green, N4 Green, S1 Red, S2 Blue, and W6 Red (The other 5 hardest treasures in the game) to utter shame! It's a perfect final 100th treasure!

I think I will upload new releases to the Internet Archive since RomHacking no longer accepts submissions! Obviously not all releases will be uploaded there, there will still be some that are Nintendo 3DS Central exclusives, or only to certain communities (Like Release #021 which, in addition to Nintendo 3DS Central, was only uploaded to the Wario Speedrun Community Discord Server! )!

Of course, Nintendo 3DS Central, being (one of) the most important community on the internet (Google? Not that important! YouTube? Not that important either! Microsoft? WHO NEEDS THEM!? Nintendo 3DS Central and Gaming Latest? More important than you could ever imagine! ), gets every release (yes, even ones that I will skip, if you know where to look!)!
