Hi, should I bother turning OFF the 3D slider when playing a 2D only game so it conserves energy or the New 3DS XL is smart enough to turn it OFF by itself?

Nope! When playing any part of a game that only uses 2D, the 3D slider doesn't even do anything! It will not consume any additional power as it's not even being used in the first place!
